New Q Grader Certification Rules: Starting in 2023, annual flavor calibration is required, with fees and validity periods adjusted accordingly
Starting January 1, 2023, the Q Grader certification system will undergo significant changes. CQI requires all certified individuals and those currently enrolled in courses to independently complete an annual flavor calibration called Flavoractiv Calibration; otherwise, their certification will become invalid, and the certificate validity period will be shortened from three years to one year. At the same time, the triennial cupping calibration must still be attended as usual. The new requirement does not need an instructor present; individuals only need to purchase designated capsules, follow the instructions, and upload their answers to renew. CQI has also introduced calibration packages for different group sizes, priced from $160 to $585, with lower unit prices for larger groups. This article will provide a detailed interpretation of the new rules and fee changes. [more…]
After upgrading its membership program, Starbucks launched a star lottery, and users who invested their inventory ended up with time-limited stars, sparking debate.
The Starbucks app recently completed an upgrade, officially adding the Diamond tier to its membership system, and simultaneously launched a limited-time lottery event where members can participate using stars. The top prize of 888 stars looks tempting—converted at 9 stars for a grande beverage, that's equivalent to 98 free coffees. However, many users only discovered after spending their hard-earned stars that most results merely returned a small number of stars valid for just two weeks, or even came up empty-handed. The odds of winning, the expiration period of rewards, and issues like accidentally tapping and having stars automatically deducted have led some people to jokingly call this event a "star recycling program." Starbucks Card auto-deduction after expiration sparks complaints, ongoing disputes over consumers' right to know and activation time
Recently, Starbucks star gift cards have triggered multiple consumer complaints due to automatically deducting a monthly deferred management fee after expiration and lacking clear notifications. Some users reported that the deductions continued for 22 months before they偶然 discovered it, and when they called customer service, they were told that the practice was compliant. An investigation found that although the relevant terms are displayed in bold in the App, users are not required to actively confirm reading them during the binding process. In addition, the activation time is not marked on the star gift card, and consumers' understanding of the "date of activation" differs from the official definition. This article will sort out the focus of complaints, the details of the rules, and the core of the dispute, and explore the boundary between the reasonableness of prepaid card deductions and users' right to be informed. For professionals currently preparing for or planning to obtain the old Black Certificate, this year is the final window of opportunity. [more…]

Costa Pu'er tea labeled with a 100-year shelf life sparks controversy; experts say it lacks scientific basis and poses food safety risks
Recently, a consumer discovered that a package of Costa's organic ripe Pu'er compressed tea was labeled with a shelf life of 100 years, with a production date of October 1, 2025, and an expiration date of October 1, 2125. This bizarre labeling quickly sparked questions: was it a printing error, or can tea cakes really be stored for a century? Customer service responded that "the older the tea, the more fragrant it is," but experts and lawyers both pointed out that the national standard for Pu'er tea only states "suitable for long-term storage," with no fixed number of years. A 100-year shelf life can neither be scientifically verified nor is it free from hidden food safety risks such as mold. At the same time, some e-commerce platforms still sell Costa Pu'er tea with a shelf life labeled as 9,999 days, which works out to more than 27 years. As coffee enthusiasts, Front Street Coffee also reminds you to pay attention to the compliance and scientific validity of beverage shelf-life labeling. [more…]

After the incident spread on social media, Starbucks customer service first asked the customer to mail the vouchers to verify their authenticity, then after two apologies adjusted the compensation plan, and ultimately agreed that the customer could keep the two paper vouchers, which hold commemorative value. Former employees revealed that such "thank you" vouchers originated from the period when Uni-President Group handled the business in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region, representing an emotional connection between the brand and its customers.
